A Dynamical Systems Approach to Characterizing Brain–Body Interactions during Movement: Challenges, Interpretations, and Recommendations

Brain–body interactions (BBIs) have been the focus of intense scrutiny since inception scientific method, playing a foundational role in earliest debates over philosophy science. Contemporary investigations BBIs to elucidate neural principles motor control benefited from advances neuroimaging, device engineering, and signal processing. However, these studies generally suffer two major limitations. First, they rely on interpretations ‘brain’ activity that are behavioral nature, rather than neuroanatomical or biophysical. Second, employ methodological approaches inconsistent with dynamical systems approach neuromotor control. These limitations represent fundamental challenge use for answering basic applied research questions neuroimaging neurorehabilitation. Thus, this review is written as tutorial address both those interested studying through lens. we outline current best practices acquiring, interpreting, cleaning scalp-measured electroencephalography (EEG) acquired during whole-body movement. discuss historical theories modeling EEG kinematic data systems. Third, provide worked examples canonical model empirical collected subjects an overground walking task.
